Motorcycle Trailer
Hitches
Motorcycle trailer hitches connect your cargo
to your bike. Carrying or hauling cargo is no longer restricted
to trucks or vans, as a matter of fact; motorcycles are now
being equipped with hitches. Motorcycle trailer hitches are
installed to allow riders to haul a variety of items, campers,
boats, trailers, and more.
A
trailer hitch can be added to a motorcycle with minimal or no
impact to the structural integrity of the bike’s frame. Your
basic hitch is really a simple device consisting of a knob or
ball mounted to the towing vehicle and a coupler mounted on the
trailer or vehicle being towed. The trailer coupler fits over
the hitch ball with a lever that’s pressed down to lock the two
together. Usually there is a safety pin that slides through a
hole on the lever to prevent it from popping up when towing.
The 3 most common ball sizes are 1 7/8”, 2”, and 2 5/16” –
other sizes are available too based on your towing needs. You
also need to match the hitch to the make & model of your
motorcycle, ensuring you don’t exceed the towing capacity. A
weight of 500 pounds is usually the maximum weight limit for
motorcycle trailer hitches.
Additional safety features are an essential
part of motorcycle trailers and hitch packages and these
include, wiring harnesses for proper lighting, safety chains
that will secure the trailer to the bike, and a hitching post,
which allows the bike to uncouple from the trailer. It’s always
a good idea to include the additional safety items because
there’s little room for error when you’re on the
road.
The
freedom of long haul trips is no longer confined to cars,
trucks, or vans. Motorcycle trailer hitches have allowed riders
the opportunity to pack for the long haul in a safe, efficient
manner. A reliable hitch with a quality trailer ensures the
safety of you, your cargo, and those on the
road.
